Taco Seasoning

Makes Approximately 1 Cup (250ml)
Homemade taco seasoning is simple to make and well worth the effort. Once you make up a batch, you will never go back to buying commercial packages which are filled with preservatives and fillers. Our recipe adds cocoa powder which gives it a true Mexican twist. It can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 months and used as needed.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup (120ml) Mexican chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon (1ml) cayenne
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons (45ml) cumin
  • 2 teaspoons (10ml) garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons (10ml) onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) oregano
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) sea salt
  • ½ tablespoon (7.5ml) freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) cornstarch

Method

Whisk all the ingredients in a large bowl to combine completely. Place in an airtight container and store in a dry, dark area until ready to use.

When making tacos, mix 2-3 tablespoons (30-45ml) of the taco seasoning with 1 pound (500g) of ground beef, chicken or turkey after you have browned the meat. Add ⅔ cup (160ml) of water and mix well, continuing to cook for another 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened.

Add ½ cup (100g) crushed tomatoes to the meat mixture for added flavor. It is at this time that you can increase the “heat” by adding in red pepper flakes. Continue to cook until most of the moisture has evaporated.

Our taco seasoning is lightly salted so be sure to season with additional salt and pepper, to taste, just before serving.

Serve in your choice of soft or hard taco shells along with your favorite toppings.

*Cook’s Note: 2½ tablespoons (37.5ml) of our taco seasoning equals 1 store bought package used to season 1 pound (500g) of ground beef, chicken or turkey. Our recipe makes enough for multiple batches. Not just for tacos, this seasoning can be used in dips and salad dressings. Just remember to give your jar a good shake to remix the spices before using.
